Drivers are being urged to take extra care as sleet, snow and high winds are set to hit the region.

The Highways Agency has now issued an Amber Alert, meaning drivers should be cautious, especially on motorways and other main roads. The warning will remain in force until 11am tomorrow.

Commuters should take extra care during peak travel times and check weather conditions before setting out.

The alert has been issued after the Met Office forecast snow showers spreading across the north west and winds of up to 50mph in some areas.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: “Along with the Met Office, we are strongly advising that journey times are likely to be extended in a number of areas and that some journeys may be disrupted.

“Higher sections of the M6 and trans-Pennine routes are most at risk including parts of the A69, A66, M62 and A628.

“Road users should heed messages on overhead signs and listen for radio updates.”

More information can be found by visiting www.highways.gov.uk/traffic or calling the Highways Agency Information Line on 0300 123 5000.

Drivers should ensure they are prepared in the event of their journeys being disrupted by severe weather including wearing or packing suitable clothing and a winter driving kit.
