21st century Garden Suburb Moves Closer ….

THE Lancaster Club will be transformed into a 21st century Garden Suburb if ambitious plans get the go-ahead ….

Councillors will be asked on Monday to approve Bellway Homes as the developer, with work due to start early next year. The proposal is for 142 two, three and four-bedroom homes for sale.

Bellway will also convert the Grade II-listed former Lancaster Club building into high-quality apartments.

Council leader Jim McMahon said: “Our plans for the site have created a lot of interest and excitement and I’m delighted Bellway Homes have formally expressed their interest.”

Last year the council unveiled its vision to redevelop the site into a ‘Garden Suburb’. Oldham’s existing Garden Suburb was one of the first members of the Garden Cities Association and opened in Hollins Road in August 1909. It retains a community spirit in evidence since householders fist moved in.
